What Are Sigils?
Sigils are a type of energy work where the sigil crafter/creator designs a symbol for a specific meaning or intention. The symbol holds the energy of that intention, making it very powerful during its application (as almost all energy work relies on intention to work). If you make a sigil for prosperity, the symbol will hold the energy behind your intention to bring in more prosperity. They work similar to the law of attraction and thoughtforms-what you're pulling into your life via thought will manifest.
The term comes from the Latin "sigillum" and means "seal." Think of a sigil as sealing your intention in a visualized form. The Lesser Key of Solomon is known for sigil work, as are other magic and occult practices. But sigils aren't bound to magic and occult work! I use them for mindfulness and healing, having cured small ailments, worked through difficult emotions, and increased my energy and ability to meditate through sigils. They're also relaxing to design.

How Do I Use a Sigil?
There are a lot of ways to use a sigil. After crafting one (which this post talks a lot about), you can do something as simple as just visualizing the symbol or drawing it in the air to cast it's intention. Some sigils have names (like Reiki symbols), which you might say their name a certain number of times after. For a sigil like prosperity, you could draw it in the air or somewhere else, and then say "prosperity" three times with strong intention to use it. This is just one of many ways, you don't have to say or think anything if you don't want to.
You can draw the sigil anywhere that will eventually fade, as a way of casting its intention out into the Universe. When the sigil fades, it's symbolic of the symbol fully manifesting its purpose. This could be drawing it on sand with a rising tide, your skin with a washable marker, a piece of paper that burns (carefully), a shredded document, directly in water, a zen sand table thing, stare at it until it blurs in your vision, have it melt on the side of a candle, etc.
Sigils don't have to fade, you can have one remain as a permanent sign in your room/car/etc or even as a tattoo. Sigils work entirely by intention, so if you feel sigils are stronger when they remain permanent, trust that intuition and stick to keeping them permanent! I use a mix of both methods. I draw sigils on my journals which I intend to protect them permanently, but for healing and my own life I tend to draw them on myself and let them wash off, or I just visualize the shape in light before me and cast it. My favorite method is to use paint or marker (non-toxic) on my skin and allow the sigil to become one with me. It eventually fades, but the mix of permanence and release I feel imbues it with the strongest energy for my personal needs. You can do whatever works best with you.
You can use a sigil an infinite number of times. They aren't just something that's used once! The number of times used it entirely up to you.
